New to Library eBooks? Here's How to Get Started

Photo of eBook device by Joe Wilcox .Got a new e-reader for Christmas? Or maybe a new tablet or smartphone? If so, you may want to head on over to the library website to check out the growing collection of ebooks available for free loan. Here's a quick guide to help get you up and running with the library's main ebook collection.

First, you’ll need to set up your device or computer to use library ebooks. Go to the San Mateo County Library ebooks page. Look for and click on the My Help icon. This will open up a helpful interactive tool that provides step by step instructions for setting up your particular device.

In addition, there are printed handouts available at your library, with instructions for Kindle, Android, Apple, Nook, Windows, and more.

Once setup is complete, you’re ready to browse the main collection. You can browse by format, genre, authors, titles, and subjects. If a title you want is checked out, you can place a no-fee hold.

Add titles to your cart, and check out. You can check out up to 15 items. The lending period may vary from title to title. Many titles allow you to select your own lending period from 7, 14, or 21 days.

Click on Download, and follow the prompts to download the title to your computer or mobile device. Many titles now offer the choice of bypassing Download, and reading right from your web browser via the cloud.

Enjoy immediately, or transfer from a computer to a compatible device if necessary. The title automatically expires at the end of the lending period, so you will never have overdue ebooks in your account.
