A Day on the Bookmobile

It is the library brought to you! This humongous bus is artfully arranged to display a whole array of adult and children materials: fiction, non-fiction books, DVDs, CDs, books on CDs, magazines. Kids can play with an assortment of toys while mom and dad browse the shelves.

Where Does it Go and When?

Its route includes East Palo Alto, San Carlos (in front of the Aviation Museum) and La Honda, but also the coastal towns of El Granada, Half Moon Bay, Montara, Moss Beach, Pacifica and Pescadero. It visits parks, senior communities, markets, shopping centers, schools, and more. The schedule is available on smcl.org and  Facebook.

Upcoming Events

Parties and fun activities happen at the Bookmobile! Dedicated and resourceful librarian Pamela Bilz organizes a Traditional British High Tea Party.

Just like the bigger libraries, the Bookmobile will host the famous "Magnetic Block Party" on September 17th, where kids can create, build and play, at Montara's Farallone View Elementary School (2:30-4pm) and Moss Beach at the Pillar Ridge Community (4:30-5:30pm).

A Special Day

It was a privilege to help Pamela on one of her tours recently. Before leaving our San Mateo headquarters, we prepared treats for that day’s Tea Party, assembling cucumber and chicken salad sandwiches. Pamela had already baked dozens of scones, putting in an incredible amount of work to get everything ready. She had polished her silver tea set for eight hours straight and borrowed her family's lace tablecloths, tea cups, saucers, and linen napkins.

We loaded the bus and were on our way to East Palo Alto, where we parked in front of the Home Depot. Many, many kids visited, played and enjoyed the Bookmobile there. Our second stop was University Square Park, where we donned our British lady hats and set up for the party.

So if the Bookmobile comes to your neighborhood or if you happen to spot it, don’t hesitate… have a fun visit with us!
